How Do I Clean My Keurig?

Coffee is one of the most beautiful substances known to humanity, and pod coffee systems like those made by Keurig have quickly taken over millions of kitchens across the country as the primary source of morning fuel for Americans. As easy as these machines may be to use during the pre-coffee morning haze, they aren’t magically impervious to the wear and tear all devices with moving parts eventually succumb to. One of the most common issues owners of these machines may end up facing is a clog – luckily, this problem is easy to fix with the right ingredients.

What Do I Need?

  • White vinegar
  • Water
  • Clean, dry rag
  • Clean, damp rag

I Have What I Need. Now What?

Before you even think about starting your clean, make sure you unplug your machine. Electrocution, while technically a very effective way to jump start your morning, comes with some serious health risks.

  • Take It Apart: If it can be taken off, take it off. That includes the K-cup holder, the mug stand and the water reservoir and its lid. Pop all these pieces in the sink and wash them with warm water and soap before letting them dry off.
  • Wipe It Down: Depending on the state of your machine, you should either use your dry or damp clean rag to wipe down the surface of your machine. Make sure to pay extra attention to the area around where the K-cup is inserted to clear out any tea leaves and / or coffee grounds may have accumulated. Once you’re satisfied with your cleaning efforts, replace all of the parts you removed for cleaning and plug it back in.
  • Time for a Vinnegar Rinse: Fill your machine’s water reservoir with a mixture of equal parts water and white vinegar. Without inserting a K-cup into the holder, start the brew cycle – keep running your machine until the reservoir is drained, and make sure you have a cup or mug underneath to catch the watery vinegar. This will help clear up any scale and lime buildup inside your machine, and should be done every three to six months depending on how frequently you brew coffee or tea and what type of water you use.
  • Rinse: Fill the water reservoir with clean water and run the machine until any remaining vinegar taste is gone.

And that’s it! All that’s left is to clean up any mess made during your clean. Filling up your machine with spring or bottled water may reduce the amount of buildup you need to deal with, and using a straw to blow into the water line can help dislodge any debris that may give you trouble. Your machine’s manufacturer should have detailed information on how to clean specific parts of your machine on their websites. At the very least, they should have a customer support number that you can call.
