How Do I Clean My Phone?

Do you know how dirty your phone really is? A study conducted by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine discovered that as many as 92 percent of the phones they tested had bacteria present, and the episode of the Discovery Channel Show MythBusters titled ‘Hidden Nasties’ found that the cell phone they tested grew more bacterial colonies than a toilet seat. We spend so much time using our phones every day, so it makes sense that they would get a bit dirty if we don’t take the time to clean them every so often. Luckily, that process can be incredibly quick and easy if you have the right supplies.

Use Cleaning Wipes

The type of wipe you use comes down to personal preference, and your options include anything from pre-moistened anti-bacterial wipes. You could also invest in a microfiber phone cleaning kit or a full size screen cleaning kit to keep at home. As long as you break out the cleaning supplies on a fairly regular basis, your phone screen should remain clean and bacteria-free.

Homemade Screen Cleaning

Whether you don’t want to take the time to go to the store or if you just feel like being chemically crafty, you can always make your own homemade screen cleaning solution. Just grab an empty spray bottle and fill it with a 50 / 50 mixture of distilled water and 70 percent rubbing alcohol. The distilled water is key here – tap water could leave behind a thin film of residue. You could also fill that same spray bottle with a 50 / 50 mixture of distilled water and white vinegar – just be prepared for your phone to smell for a little while after you’re done cleaning.

Q-Tips and Toothpicks Are Great For Cleaning Those Tight Spaces

If you notice any gunk caked in any of the little nooks and crannies of your phone, you can grab a toothpick to lightly scrape away at the buildup before taking a dry Q-tip or cotton swab to wipe away anything that comes loose. It’s important that you take extreme care when sticking anything in your phone – it’s still an expensive piece of technology, and you don’t want to cause any irreparable damage while trying to get it clean.
