How Do I Clean My Microwave?

Using a microwave may not be the best way to cook a delicious meal, but it’s by far the fastest, and just like any other piece of machinery, it needs to be cared for every once in a while. Whether you choose to clean your microwave every few months or every few years, we can help.

Microwave Some Soapy Water

  • Step 1: Find a microwave safe bowl. If you aren’t sure, check the bottom of the container – most will indicate whether or not they can be microwaved, but if you still can’t tell you should probably avoid using it for the sake of safety.
  • Step 2: Fill up your bowl with warm water and a few squirts of dishwashing liquid. You don’t need to worry about mixing the two together. If you’re worried about the way your microwave smells, add a scoop or two of baking soda to your soapy water to serve as a deodorizer.
  • Step 3: Set your microwave on high, and let it run for 1 minute, or until you see that it’s started to steam.
  • Step 4: Get some dishtowels or oven mitts to protect your hand before pulling the bowl out of the microwave. Set it aside, and take a damp sponge to wipe down the inside of your microwave. The steam from your bowl should have loosened up any of the gunk clinging to the walls, allowing for a quick and easy clean.

Window Cleaner

If you don’t have a microwave safe bowl or would just rather use an alternative method, no need to worry.

  • Step 1: Unplug your microwave.
  • Step 2: Grab a bowl and fill it with one part warm water and two parts window cleaner, and mix the two together.
  • Step 3: Grab a sponge, dip it in your cleaning solution and start scrubbing. If you notice any especially problematic areas, soak it with your cleaning solution and allow it to sit for about five minutes before you start to work on it.
  • Step 4: Once you’re satisfied with your sponge job, soak a clean dish towel in water – just water, not your cleaning solution – and use it to wipe down the inside of your microwave.
  • Step 5: Now it’s time to wait until your microwave is dry. If you want, you can also use the cleaning solution to wipe down the outside of your microwave.

Whatever you do, don’t use pre-soaked scrubbing pads to clean your microwave. They may leave some loose particles behind that have a tendency to catch fire and explode.
