How Do I Clean My Washing Machine?

Washing machines are some of the most important appliances we keep in our homes, and make cleaning even the dirtiest of clothes a breeze. But what happens when our washing machine is in need of a good clean? Before you call in the experts or, in an extreme case, head out to your local store to buy a new machine, we have a quick way to eliminate those nasty odors, and keep mold and mildew out.

Step 1: Turn on your washing machine and set it to the run at the largest load with hot water. Add 3-4 cups of white vinegar into the machine and wait a minute or two for the water and vinegar to mix together.

Step 2: Ad a half a cup of baking soda to the water and vinegar. Run the machine long enough for the baking soda to fully mix with the liquids, and then turn it off. Let it sit for anywhere from 30 minutes to a full hour.

Step 3: Just because your washing machine is taking a break doesn’t mean you have to. Dip a towel or cloth in the water, vinegar, and baking soda mixture and use it to wipe down the inside of your washing machine. Don’t miss any part – wipe down the knobs, the top, the sides, as well as any and all dispensers you can find. For the hard to reach places, grab a clean toothbrush and dip it in your water, vinegar, and baking soda mixture before giving your machine a good scrub.

Step 4: Now it’s time to turn your washing machine back on. Let the cycle run until you see the water start to drain. If your washing machine can keep spinning while it drains, that’s awesome. Otherwise, just start a second hot water cycle and let it finish.

Step 5: Grab a sponge to wipe down whatever scum remains from the wash cycle.

And that’s it! Keeping your cleaning machines in tip-top shape is an important part of keeping your house and belongings clean.
